These songs are among the oldest songs I’ve written, having been started many years ago, but never finished. As I took a fresh look at each song I sometimes started from an old and rough recording of a more or less complete song. In other instances I started with just a scrap of music and lyrics. In all instances, however, I remember quite well my goals in writing the original. This allowed me to stay close to my original intent while bringing the benefits of life-lived to the arrangements and lyrics.
Life-lived: it’s funny how that works. I can look at each of these songs and see that younger me was on to something: I was touching a personal truth. Sometimes it was my reaction to a story in the news. Sometimes I was reflecting on a person who was or who had been in my life. Sometimes it was something I was experiencing. But younger me often lacked the musical and experiential background to appropriately express what I was feeling. Perhaps that’s why the tunes were left undone
